This project consists of developing a model to compute a quantitative measure of the risk of railway accidents, focusing on frontal collisions due to obstacles. The input data cover the characteristics of railway infrastructure, traffic and trains. The model can be used to compare risks associated with different strategies in order to improve security: installing obstacle-detecting systems, building barriers, decreasing speed limits, etc. This model has been used to analyze these types of strategies on the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed railway
